The Story

Hey, all you know is that you were driving down a lonely, deserted country road just minding your own business when, with a blur of motion and a flash of white light, you find yourself waking up on board a UFO. You are approached by a being dressed in white who conveys to you the thought: "You have been greatly honored, human. You have been chosen to represent your race in the Arena."

After what seemed like weeks of travel, you arrived at a huge arena. You were told to choose a vehicle that is to your liking so that you may face other humans and members of three other alien races in armed combat. So much for your nice peaceful existance on Earth...

The Game

Trials of Battle is best described as a multiplayer, multivehicle simulator, that is designed to facilitate fast paced, close quarters combat. There is no blowing up an unseen enemy radar blip from 10 miles away with a long range missile. This is up close and personal, in your face combat, with mainly short range weapons and the vehicle of your choice. For your vehicle, you may choose from one of two types of Battle Pods or a Hovercraft.

Battle Pods can be thought of as hovering, self-propelled gun turrets that float over the terrain about a meter above the ground. Your choice of vehicles will mostly depend on your preferred style of combat. If you like straight up, toe-to-toe slugfests there is the Heavy Battle Pod - designed to be able to withstand and dish out plenty of punishment. If you prefer to utilize speed and agility over raw firepower there is the Hovercraft. This flying vehicle is best suited for "hit and run" types of attacks which make maximum use of its superior manueverability and speed. If your tastes run somewhere between these last two, there is the Light Battle Pod which has more speed and manueverability than the Heavy Battle Pod but can withstand more damage and use heavier weapons and armor than the Hovercraft. The Light Battle Pod can also fly for brief periods of time if equipped with Jump Engines.

One on one, gladiator style combat is the essence of the game. Though there will most likely be more than two combatants per combat round (this is player controlled), and teaming up with other combatants is certainly possible. The only objective is to survive the Arena. To do this, you must achieve the rank of Battle Master. This will require many rounds of combat - where you must meet and defeat the best pilots the Arena has to offer. This includes members of three alien races (each with their own traits and nuances) as well as humans.

You will also need to constantly try to upgrade and improve your vehicle by purchasing more advanced armor, weapons, and equipment as the combat rounds become more difficult. You obtain these items by trading in Kill Points or by picking the items up in the Arena during combat. Kill Points are awarded for each vehicle you destroy during combat. The higher the rank of the opponent whose vehicle you destroy, the more Kill Points you will be awarded. You can also earn Kill Points by selling the pieces of equipment that you pick up in the Arena (if you don't want to use them yourself, of course). Also, the Arena's terrain and environmental conditions (visibility and gravity) can change from round to round. You don't want to get stuck with a loaded down Heavy Battle Pod in high gravity conditions. You have the ability to store or sell equipment that you don't need or don't want for the next combat round.
