Under GroupList > Settings > Article, play around with
the Remove Article Files After Close, Remove Articles From
Database After X Days, and Only Store Unread Articles In The
Database options. Unless there is a pressing reason to
continually store old articles, purging them from the
database after a few days should improve the performance of
the program as it loads(not to mention saving space on
your hard drive!).
Besides actually fixing the problem, a future update should also
add a "Only download XXX headers" option to limit downloads when
you do not want to grab all 14,000 messages in a group. Please
hang in there while we try to get this resolved.
Fortunately, any newsgroups that are not listed can be displayed by
using the "funnel filter" below the newsgroup listing to only
display(for example) groups that begin with 'R'.
If this feature is disabled and the problem is still occuring, please
drop an e-mail to support@stardock.com
with the details.
Purely as an FYI, PlusPak: PMINews' integration with PMMail is
such that users can drag articles to PMMail folders and sort
them there.

I download PlusPak: PMINews from the Stardock Commerce Server. Where
is my registration number?
There are no registration numbers per se for PlusPak: PMINews.
The confirmation e-mail you received when you ordered the product
contains an order number that should be used in place of a
registration number. Please note that you do not need to include
your order number when requesting support.![]()
I have installed PlusPak: PMINews and I am getting
SYS3175 errors when I try to start the program. Help!
Your article database may have become corrupted.
PlusPak: PMINews 1.01a updated the database handling mechanisms to help prevent
errors from occuring in unexpected situations. Apply the 1.01a update
to your system and see if the problem persists. If the 3175 errors
still occur, try renaming ...\PMINEWS\[your account].GL\GL* to
prevent the program from attempting to use a possibly corrupted
database. If the problem continue to occur, please contact
support@stardock.com with
any trap information and what you were doing when it occured.![]()
PlusPak: PMINews takes a long time to load the article
database when I start the program. [Note: "a long time" varies
by systems and configuration. If you have a lot of groups,
it could take 30-40 seconds to load the article database for
all your groups.]
You may be storing all your downloaded articles and not cleaning
them out occasionally. Changing the amount of time the
article files(and the references to them in the database) are
stored can make a huge difference in performance.![]()
If I mark messages for later download while offline and then
close the program, the selected messages are no longer marked
when I restart.
This is not a bug, it is a "missing" feature("missing" in that
it was never there to begin with). It is under consideration
for a future update.![]()
Complete list of subscribed newsgroups cannot be seen when
the list is larger than the area on screen.
This is a limitation imposed by OS/2's handling of its
own controls. Try relocating the window on screen to fit
additional newsgroups.![]()
Codepage translation does not work like other newsreaders.
Some newsreaders ignore Internet RFC's and "force" character
set translation. PlusPak: PMINews(as currently implemented)
complies with the appropriate standards for translation. However,
it is possible that an option will be added in the future to
"force" this setting for those users that require it.![]()
I have multiple newsservers defined in one GroupList. However,
whenever I try to post to a newsgroup from my second server,
the post always attempts to go through the first server.
This is a known issue, but we have yet to develop a solution that
is acceptable in terms of the performance impact the "easy"
workaround would have. More news as it becomes available.![]()
PlusPak: PMINews needs a "STOP" button to end
in-progress/pending network activity.
We are working on it for a future update. See the next item
for some additional information.![]()
While talking to the server(esp. while attempting to download
all the headers for large newsgroups), the program will "timeout",
forcing me to restart it. Why?
We think we have developed a fix for this problem that will be
intergrated into a future update. Short version: there are some
additional commands that can be passed to the server to inform
it that the user will be reading online and to not disconnect them.![]()
PlusPak: PMINews crashes when loading large newsgroups.
We are still trying to track down exactly why this occurs, but the
working theory right now is that there is a memory allocation problem
relating to large groups(generally ones with thousands of messages,
though it varies).![]()
I can only see newsgroups from A to (something) on the Server
tab. All the newsgroups on my server are present in my NEWS_IC1.SVR
file, but I cannot see all of them.
This is a limitation imposed by the OS/2 control being used to
display the information. At the moment, there is no easy way to
permanently fix this. (For those customers who have suggested
using a tree metaphor, there are enough problems with that approach
that it probably will not happen.)![]()
When I start PlusPak: PMINews, my GroupList appears to refresh but
the only way I can see any new information is to manually refresh
my newsgroups. What gives?
Check to see if GroupList > Settings > > News > Download
Headers On Demand is checked. If this setting is checked, uncheck
it and see it "problem" persists. In reality, when this setting is
checked, the program is working correctly. This feature was added
to speed up operations for users who did not want to wait for all
their newsgroups to refresh before being able to work. They can
selectively download headers(and later articles) only in those groups
that they want to deal with at the moment.![]()
Articles are left in ARTICLES directory past purge date.
This is a known problem, though it is not occurring in all cases.
There is no workaround at the moment(other than manually deleting
any .ART files in the ARTICLES directory that are obviously older
than what the database purge settings should allow).![]()
Disconnecting and reconnecting to an ISP while PlusPak: PMINews is
active prevents the program from working.
This is a known problem. The "solution" is simply to restart
PlusPak: PMINews after the connection to the ISP has been reestablished.
Unfortunately, depending on how you work with the program, this
will lose any messages you have marked to download(though technically
the program is working as designed, as it does not currently supposed
to save the state of marked messages between sessions).![]()
I want to be able to create my own folders!
Unfortunately, adding the ability for users to create their own folders
adds an enormous amount of complexity to the way the code for
those functions must be handled(read: a feature like this will
probably not happen in a 1.0x update). There are several reasons
behind this, but the explanation is more technical than it is
worth going into here.![]()
The Mark Not To Download menu choice is grayed out.
This function only works in Offline mode(PMINews > General > Offline Mode).![]()
