SC:O - Ship Battle Strategies?

I'm nearing the end of the SC:O campaign but can't seem to use some of the ships effectively (and I'm a Star Control II vet!)
My favourite is the Greegrox ship and can use the Terran, Tywom, and the contagion ships (forgot the name!) fairly well.
But I struggle to use the Trandals, Mowlings, MenkMack and Mu'Kay as they're extremely short range. (Although the latter has helped with the Scryve Juggernaut battles.
Any Tips? I've particularly heard that some people love the Trandals ship.
