Known issues and fixes
-Game Opt Ins
For any issue, please check to see if any current opt-in is available that may address your issue:
Initial Game Resolution Low:
Some may have the game start initially with the resolution lower than their primary resolution. To fix, just change the 'Resolution' under 'Options' in the main menu and restart.
-Game Crashes / Poor Frame Rate
For the few that have reported some crashing issues, many have been shown to be related to low (or no) 'Page File' (aka Virtual Memory).
To see if this could be related to your problem, please see the 'Page File Setting' below and match it.
Also, please try to run the game on lower settings and full-screen borderless window. To make this easier, below is a link to a preformatted settings file:
https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/SC_LowSettings.zip
Unzip that to:
\Documents\My Games\Star Control
and try to run the game again.
Game loading issues
-Verifying your Game Cache within Steam / GoG Galaxy
Steam: Follow this link to verify your Steam files: VALIDATE
If that does not have Steam open an Window automatically, and start to validate, you can do so manually:
GOG: Visit this image for an example of verifying your game within the Galaxy client: http://sd.stardock.com/brad.ather/Jingimages/2016-01-04_1033.png
-Run Steam as Administrator
Exit Steam completely by right clicking it's icon on your taskbar. Next, right click the icon on your taskbar, then right click where it lists Steam, and select Run as Administrator.
-Run the Game executable directly
Go to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Control - Origins\Game
(or where you have the game actually installed)
And run: StarControl_DX11.exe directly.
-Delete settings
Please go to:
\Documents\My Games\Star Control
rename: settings.ini
to: settings.old
And try to run the game again
-Update Video Drivers
Please make sure your video drivers are up-to-date. Even if they are current, a full remove, and reinstall, would be prudent; especially if you have recently installed Windows 10.
Use the link(s) below for updating:
Intel:

Note: Please perform a "clean installation" if you have an Nvidia graphics card. The below screenshots will help with how to do that:

-Page File Setting
The game engine can be resource intensive at times and needs an adequate virtual memory / page file size. The best way to work this is to have Windows manage itself (some people set it manually). If you are getting initial crashing, or crashing over time, please use the below to set the page file
Windows 10:
Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items ->System -> Advanced System Settings:
Make sure you have it set as such (click to enlarge):
-Re-Installing Redistributables
In EACH of the following locations:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2015
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2017
Run: vc_redist.x64.exe
Reboot and try to run the game again.
-Re-Install DirectX
In the following location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010
Run: DXSetup.exe
Reboot and try to run the game again.
Clean Boot
Prior to continuing, it would be prudent to make sure the issue you are encountering is not occurring as a result of an application conflict. The best way to proceed would be to try loading under a new Window's Administrator account and in a "clean boot" state.
Create a new Windows Administrator (<--important that its an Administrator) account:
Winodws 7:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-7
Windows 10:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-local-user-account-in-windows-10
Windows 8:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-8
Log in under that account and try. If it fails, and while still under that account, please click the link below for performing a 'clean boot' under it:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
After you've loaded Windows in a clean state, please try once again.
*IMPORTANT NOTE*
Once you are booted into a clean state, you may need to Install the Steam service again. You can do so by trying to start up Steam. If Steam asks you to install the Steam service, simply hit "Install Service" and try to boot up Steam again:

In the "My Games" folder, if there is still a folder remaining called "Star Control" please rename it (Star Control OLD for example) - a new one will be generated on next launch of the game.
Lastly, please navigate to the path below and delete the entire folder for Star Control: Origins:
STEAM: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Star Control - Origins
GALAXY: C:\Program Files (x86)\GalaxyClient\Games\Star Control - Origins
Note: The path above assumes you've installed Star Control: Origins to the default Steam/Galaxy directory. You may need to adjust the path accordingly if it is installed to a non-standard location.
Restart your computer and reinstall Star Control: Origins using Steam/Galaxy. After it has completed the installation, please create a new save and let us know if you experience any further issues.
