Windows keeps Moving the Cheese, Start11 Puts It Back

The new default Start Menu experience in Windows 11

It’s a blog post that we can write annually, Microsoft has once again updated the Start menu that takes up more space and for some users, moving content to undesirable locations. There is a new Windows update rolling, KB5067036, that is updating the menu for all Windows users.

With the update, Windows Central describes what happens after you reboot once you install the release, “you may have been met with an unfamiliar Start menu. There's a good chance that some of your apps have moved and the Start menu itself has a different size and layout than before.” It’s clear that Microsoft doesn’t worry about moving your content or changing the actual size of your Start menu and this doesn’t even consider everything they are doing with Copilot.

And you already know the answer to how you can keep your Start menu consistent, organized and more importantly, yours. Start11 is the most advanced Start menu available with a robust set of options to fully customize your experience and most importantly, not have it changed because Microsoft’s priorities have shifted, again.

The Start11 Experience - one of several Start menu layout options

In a thread on Reddit, where users were surprised by the rather significant update, BlackAccipiter says it well - "get Start11 to change your whole Start Menu and Task bar even. It's been life changing and makes desktop more usable".

There is no doubt that we are heading full steam ahead into the AI era and that there is no going back. And more importantly for Windows fans, that also means that Windows will evolve with new functionality and Microsoft also putting Copilot, everywhere.

Start11 continues to be a functional constant for your desktop. By allowing you to adapt to modern Start menu experiences or stick with a traditional Windows 7 style layout or the modern layout that adds slight enhancements for the classic styles, the desktop is yours, not theirs.

If you haven’t tried Start11, you can download it for free and it’s also included in the award-winning suite, Object Desktop.
