How do pirates work?

I just have a few questions about pirates.

1. I understand the only way to get pirates is through an auction. However I wonder, is there more than one pirate auction per game?

2. If a trade line passes over a pirate hex what is the amount it is raided. If the same line goes over two hexes does it get raided more?

3. Do pirates last the whole game?
