Take to the Stars Episode Seven: Anastasia Xu

From the desk of Anastasia Xu Heiress of the Asteroid Syndicate Everyone comes to Mars with grandiose ideas. Booming businesses, second chances, a new life… Me? I came to Mars because I was bored.  Everyone always talks about how difficult it is to run a business. Frankly, I think they’re simply missing the ease of it. Hire competent people and demand that they do their jobs. You shouldn’t have to lift a finger to do anything once you get the pieces in pl... [read more]

GalCiv Journal: September 2017

The big GalCiv III v2.5 update went out.  Most people like it.  Not everyone of course (it breaks save games).  If you're liking it, you know the drill "Like and Subscribe" as they say on YouTube or in Steam's case, please leave a review.   Even if you've left a review in the past, you can delete your old one and leave a new one which will have the "Recent reviews" which matters a lot (a lot more than it should imo but hopefully Valve will update their algorithms in light of... Take to the Stars Episode Six: Reni-6

Recorded by Reni-6 Worker - Yoshimi Robotics This recording is for recordkeeping and posterity. If our mission should fail and our circuits are taken offline, our creators will know what went wrong. I am called Reni-6 and I have been in charge of overseeing development efforts here on Mars. My primary creation function is to aid the colony by building up and supplying resources to fit the needs of the humans residing there. My counterpart, Joji-5, said something about domin... GalCiv III: Drengin/Human Wars VI

Last week I did a one on one test against the Drengin AI set at Normal. It was on a tiny map in which I rushed for invasion tech and killed them. This time, let's bump the AI to Genius... AI at Genius The 2.5 GalCiv III AI is a lot smarter than previous iterations. It handles fleets better. It researches better. It builds up planets more intelligently.  But it is really difficult, even in human 1 on 1 games, to deal with a rush. Now, at Genius, the AI starts out with ... [read more]

GalCiv III: Drengin/Human Wars V

Our story so far... Every once in awhile, Do a 1 on 1 test on a relatively balanced map to see how well the AI is doing.   I play on Normal or Gifted as that puts the AI on roughly equal terms with me. I choose  the Drengin because they are a vicious, evil civilization that has few redeeming qualities and they play the game very differently than most people do (they are absolutely amoral).  Their strategies aren't always ideal but they do tend to be interest... Take to the Stars Episode Five: Ilana Kamat

From the desk of Ilana Kamat New Meridian Scientist - Lead Research Developer My current analysis of the situation is - it could be worse. Sure, it could also be a hell of a lot better, but it definitely could be worse. They call space the final frontier, but I personally think that it’s only the beginning, a stepping stone to greater things and larger horizons. There are plenty of people who think that this is as far as we’ll ever go, and that’s fine by... [read more]

Galactic Civilizations AAR: Perseus

Notes: Using Galactic Civilizations III: Crusade version 2.5 BETA   In the year 2242... This is my random playthrough of Galactic Civilizations III: Crusade v2.5.  This is my story. With the Drengin Empire defeated, the Terran Alliance was free to expand out into the galaxy.  The Perseus sector was the natural next destination for the human race.   The planet Perseus was a real gem.  A class 14 planet meant it had a large surfac... A sneak preview of Galactic Civilizations III v2.5 Part 2

For part 1 go here . Version 2.5 is easily the biggest update to the base game of GalCiv III since its first release back in 2015.  What makes these updates possible is the continuing sales of DLC and expansions like Crusade . The much beloved Galactic Civilizations II never got an update like this one.  That is because back then, games were sold at retail and so there was no realistic way to keep updating the base game like we can today for budgetary reasons.  Hence, GalC... A sneak preview of Galactic Civilizations III v2.5 Part 1

I'm so excited! We live in magical times, my friends. I've talked about the challenge of building a 4th generation game engine over at IGN .  Stardock's first attempt at building a 3rd generation engine failed pretty spectacularly (Elemental). Galactic Civilizations II was arguably a 2nd generation (upgraded) engine.  Its code base could be traced back to 1997.  So by the time it was released, it was almost 10 years old.  For GalCiv III, we decided to go dire... Take to the Stars Episode Four: Paulo Rubini

They underestimated me. They always underestimate me. I didn’t have one of the most successful real estate businesses in the state of California for nothing, you know. Coming to Mars was an easy choice - the colonies here would absolutely need someone with an eye for development, an eye for the long term goal - and that’s me . I had offers from all over, of course, but the Russians always provided the best benefits. They had me settle on Thaumasia Planum, which ce... [read more]

From the desk of Frank Dawson Foreman - Reclamation, INC. Sometimes, I wonder why I ever came to this bleedin’ rock. Then I remember I didn’t really have a choice. GalCiv Journal: August 2017 (Convergence)

Summer continues.  Unless you're in Australia or New Zealand. But they're not people. Not really.  I mean, they can't feel heat and cold.  So what's been up? The boring job of architecture update.  We've been spending the past month fixing architectural issues that have slowly built up. Take to the Stars Episode Two: Maisie Song

From the desk of Maisie Song Seneca Development   Mars is beautiful.   When I say beautiful, I don’t mean the landscape -- although there is kind of an eerie serenity to it. No, what I really mean are the opportunities. Space is Really Really Big

Video games normally take liberties with the size of the universe.  We know the universe is big but we frequently trivialize the immense size of the galaxy. Even scientists seem to trivialize this with questions like "Why haven't we detected aliens?".  The answer might be because our radio signals haven't even reached a trivial distance of the milky way galaxy. Our solar system out to Jupiter. Zooming way way out to our local neighborhood. Now this is zo... [read more]

GalCiv Journal: July 2017 (Polish and Balance)

Microsoft Surface Pro love I got GalCiv III to run on my Surface Pro 4 by manually updating the video drivers to the latest ones by Intel.  The official drivers from Microsoft are a year old and those drivers claimed to be DirectX 11 capable drivers (they were not) and so the game would crash when trying to do a DirectX 11 specific call.
