GalCiv IV Dev Journal #3

With the benefit of hindsight… Every 4X game I’ve played struggles with the late game.  This is because they tend to become a micromanagement slog where the outcome of the game was known long before.  So how do you address this?  Well, the wrong way to do it is with AI governors or other such “help” from the AI. GalCiv IV flips the concept of governors on its head. In previous GalCiv games, you had to manage every single planet you coloni... [read more]

GalCiv IV Dev Journal #2

So how do you make your galactic civilization feel like it’s a living, breathing thing? Put (simulated) living, breathing things in it: characters. We have moved everything that makes sense from being an abstract number to being a character.  Population? Instead of it being 3.2 billion, it's just 3 characters. Every character has stats and background. Every character has a set of skills with numerical values to them.  They also have a backstory and can be interacted ... [read more]

GalCiv III AAR: The Last Empire

I don’t know if this will be my last AAR of Galactic Civilizations III.   As I type this, the game is about to turn 6 years old and is still going strong. We’ve been working on an update for the game for awhile and are hoping to get it released before the anniversary (fingers crossed).  This AAR will kind of act as a retrospect on the game, mention some changes we’ve made and hopefully be entertaining. The official design guide for Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation v3.0

The 3.0 update for Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation started off as just some visual tweaks to the benchmark early in 2020 (in what would have been 2.96). Little would we realize that by the end of 2020 we would be well on the way to a more major update. This revision of the game came with two stipulations: Units must feel more differentiated and have a defined purpose. Armor Piercing needs to be either 100% or 0%, no more in-between states. That sounds pretty simple on the surface. ... [read more]

GalCiv at the end of 2020

It's hard to believe that GalCiv III was released over 5 years ago.  Since then, we've had a few major expansions and a lot of DLC. As we enter 2021, we have finally reached the stage where GalCiv III won't be seeing any new DLC but will continue to get updates in the form of balance, fixes and performance improvements as we find them.  Updates will be less frequent as QA time is particularly precious right now. Evolution of the Drengin

I think most people are fairly well aware of this fact, but in case you aren't, there's something you need to know about Galactic Civilizations: it's been around for a  really  long time .  The game's development actually started in Stardock CEO Brad Wardell's dorm room at Western Michigan State University back in 1993.
